Calcium and vitamin D for the bones

Prepared by the LekCheck team · Last reviewed: 2026-06-29 · How we create our content

Calcium and vitamin D are involved in building and maintaining bone. Vitamin D supports the absorption of calcium, and needs are met mostly through diet, exercise and enough sun. Below are the commonly sought ingredients; choose one to compare products and prices. In osteoporosis or with risk factors, the dose should be set by a doctor.

Calcium

Calcium is a basic building block of bone. It is taken when dietary intake is insufficient; for each supplement there are recommended daily amounts and an upper limit, which are best not exceeded without proper judgement.

Vitamin D and magnesium

Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) supports the absorption of calcium and is often taken for a deficiency, especially in winter. Magnesium (often with vitamin B6) is also involved in bone and muscle metabolism. Doses depend on individual needs.

When to consult

Consult a doctor for diagnosed osteoporosis, fractures from minor injuries, long-term use of corticosteroids, kidney disease, or before taking high doses of vitamin D and calcium.
