Medicines for heartburn and acid reflux

Prepared by the LekCheck team · Last reviewed: 2026-06-29 · How we create our content

Heartburn and acid reflux often respond to over-the-counter remedies that reduce or neutralise stomach acid. Below are the active ingredients most commonly used; choose one to see products and prices. For frequent, persistent or severe complaints, consult a doctor.

Quick relief

For occasional burning, antacids and H2 blockers such as famotidine are used, which act relatively quickly. They are suitable for short-term relief, not for prolonged use without proper judgement.

Proton pump inhibitors

For more frequent complaints, proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole or pantoprazole are used, which reduce acid production. Prolonged use requires medical assessment.

Gas and bloating

When the burning is accompanied by bloating, simethicone is sometimes also used, which reduces gas bubbles in the gut.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for difficult or painful swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, pain spreading to the arm or jaw, or if the complaints persist despite treatment. Suitability in pregnancy and chronic disease depends on the specific ingredient.
