Combination cold and flu medicines (powders and tablets)
Prepared by the LekCheck team · Last reviewed: 2026-07-06 · How we create our content
Combination cold and flu products (soluble powders and tablets) bring together several active ingredients in one dose — usually a fever and pain reliever, sometimes a decongestant for a blocked nose, vitamin C and/or an ingredient for a runny nose. Examples include "Analgin Quinine"-type products and "Fervex", as well as various hot-drink powders. Below we explain what they contain so you can compare sensibly; choose an active ingredient to see available products and prices.

What combination products contain
The base is usually a fever and pain reliever — most often paracetamol, and in some products metamizole (analgin). A decongestant (e.g. phenylephrine) for a blocked nose, vitamin C, and sometimes an ingredient for a runny nose and watering eyes may be added to it. The composition is printed on the pack — read it before combining several products.
Analgin Quinine and similar — what they are used for
"Analgin Quinine"-type products contain metamizole (analgin) combined with quinine and are used for flu-like states with high fever and chills. Metamizole is an effective pain and fever reliever, but in some countries its use is restricted because of a rare risk to the blood count (agranulocytosis). It should therefore not be taken long-term without a doctor's judgement — if in doubt, consult a pharmacist or doctor.
Important: do not double up on paracetamol
Because many cold products already contain paracetamol, taking another paracetamol product (or combining a powder and a tablet) can easily exceed the safe daily dose. Do not combine several products with the same active ingredient and follow the recommended dose. Alcohol and liver disease increase the risk.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a very high or persistent fever, difficulty breathing, severe pain, symptoms lasting more than a week, as well as in pregnancy, breastfeeding, chronic disease or when taking other medicines. In children, the choice of a suitable product depends on age and ingredients — consult a pharmacist.
