Medicines for children — what is important to know

Prepared by the LekCheck team · Last reviewed: 2026-06-27 · How we create our content

In children, the choice of medicine and the dose depend heavily on age and weight, and the forms are special (syrups, suppositories, drops). This article is general information only — always consult a paediatrician or pharmacist, and never give adult doses to a child.

This guide was prepared by the LekCheck team and has not been reviewed by a doctor or pharmacist. This article is for general information only and is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Do not start, stop, or change any treatment without consulting a doctor or pharmacist.

Fever and pain

In children, paediatric forms of paracetamol and ibuprofen are used for fever and pain. The dose is determined by weight and age — ask a paediatrician or pharmacist and follow the leaflet. Some products contain the same active ingredient — do not combine them.

Blocked nose

For a blocked nose in children, saline/sea-water solution is used and, when needed, decongestants only in children over a suitable age and according to the specific product / a doctor's judgement. Xylometazoline and other decongestants have age restrictions and are not suitable for small children. Do not use adult products in small children.

When to go to a doctor immediately

Seek urgent medical help for a baby with a fever, difficulty breathing, signs of dehydration, a rash, seizures, turning blue, refusal of fluids, unusual drowsiness in an infant, or if the condition is worsening. In the youngest children, always consult before giving any medicine.
