Supplements for better sleep

Prepared by the LekCheck team · Last reviewed: 2026-06-29 · How we create our content

Falling asleep well depends mostly on sleep habits (a regular schedule, fewer screens and less caffeine in the evening). Some over-the-counter supplements are sometimes used as an addition. Below are the commonly sought ingredients; choose one to compare products and prices. Supplements do not replace treatment for insomnia and are not suitable for everyone.

Melatonin

Melatonin is involved in regulating sleep; melatonin supplements are sometimes used for difficulty falling asleep or for changing time zones. Suitability and dose depend on the individual case.

Magnesium

Magnesium (often with vitamin B6) is among the sought supplements for calm and sleep. For each supplement there are recommended daily amounts.

Habits for better sleep

A regular bedtime, limiting caffeine in the afternoon and reducing screens before sleep often help more than supplements.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for prolonged insomnia, heavy daytime sleepiness, snoring with pauses in breathing, or if sleep problems are due to anxiety, pain or another condition. In pregnancy, breastfeeding, children and when taking medicines, consult a doctor or pharmacist before using melatonin.
