Medicines for a blocked nose and sinusitis

A blocked nose often accompanies a cold, allergy or sinusitis. Relief is usually symptomatic — rinses with sea/saline water and, when needed, nasal decongestants for a short period. Below are the commonly used remedies; choose an ingredient to see products and prices.

Rinsing and moisturising

Sprays and drops with sea or saline water help clear the nose and are suitable for frequent use, including in children depending on the specific product.

Nasal decongestants

Nasal decongestants (e.g. xylometazoline) can be used for a short period and according to the patient's age, to avoid a rebound effect (rebound congestion). They are not suitable for small children without a doctor's judgement.

Pain and sinus pressure

For pain and pressure around the sinuses, paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used if suitable for the patient.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for severe facial pain, high fever, symptoms lasting more than 10 days or worsening after improvement, swelling around the eye, disturbed vision, or frequent bouts of sinusitis. Suitability in children, pregnancy and chronic disease depends on the specific ingredient.
